Athletic department renovations unaffected by moratorium
November 26th, 2013

Athletic director Ben Jay said the moratorium on new construction projects at the University of Hawaii won't affect progress on ongoing work and renovation initiatives on lower campus.

"Right now the moratorium deals with new construction," Jay said in a text message today (Tuesday). "I'm assuming for now it does not include renovation. Status of the (T.C.) Ching complex is still Jan. 28 for move-in. End of February for the rest of the complex."

The oft-delayed Ching Field project has been prioritized because the NCAA could withhold certification of UH's athletic department due to lack of Title IX compliance.

The delays of the $13.39 million project have generated an audit by the UH Board of Regents.

Jay said his facilities ideas including building a stadium around the soccer practice field and turning Klum Gym into a training center remain in play.

"We are moving ahead with proposing those projects as renovation projects," he said.
